Boys State
American Legion Boys State is an educational program of government instruction for high school students. The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a separate, similar program for young ladies called Girls State.
Boys State has been a program of The American Legion since 1935 when it organized to counter the Fascist inspired Young Pioneer Camps.
At American Legion Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs.
Local high school juniors are selected by the Post to attend the program. In most cases, expenses associated with attending this program are paid by a sponsoring American Legion post, a local business or another community-based organization.
Each year high schools are notified of this opportunity and students apply through their school counselors.
School Awards
The American Legion School Award Medal is presented by Post 202 to boys and girls in public and private schools. Recipient’s best represent outstanding qualities of character and ability. The award is based on courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service, which if cultivated, results in better citizenship.
Oratorical Scholarship Program
The purpose of The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program “A Constitutional Speech Contest” is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high school students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.
Flag retirement
When the United States flag becomes worn, torn, faded or badly soiled, it is time to replace it with a new flag, and the old flag should be "retired" with all the dignity and respect befitting our nation's flag. American Legion Post 202 offers a flag retirement service to the community. Anyone having an American flag that needs to be retired may bring it to Post 202.
Volunteers are urgently needed to help carry out these programs as well as others. Therefore, anyone interested in serving in these areas, please contact the Commander at commander@americanlegionpost202.org
